Solar system a bit squashed, not nicely round

By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The solar system may not be a nice round shape, but rather a bit squashed and oblong, according to data from the Voyager 2 spacecraft exploring the solar system's outer limits, scientists said on Wednesday.

“Imagine a balloon is being blown up by the solar wind. You might imagine that if you took a balloon, which is mainly spherical, and pushed it against the wall, it would be blunted on one side,” said Edward Stone of the California…

Times Square Gets Solar-Powered Billboard

A solar and wind-powered electronic billboard will debut in New Yorks Times Square in December, becoming the flashy intersections first eco-friendly ad. Forty-five solar panels and four wind turbines will power the nearly 6,000 square foot billboard, resulting in a reduction of carbon dioxide usage by 18 tons a year

The new billboard will wrap around the corner of Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street. The exact image is yet to be announced, though an artist's rendering with a dummy image has been released.

China’s Wind Power Industry: Blowing Past Expectations

Because wind power is proving to be a cost competitive source of power for this energy thirsty nation, the Chinese are aggressively ramping up capacity wherever wind resources can be found. China, currently the world’s 5th largest generator of wind energy, is accelerating their capacities at an astounding rate.

According to a National Development and Reform Commission plan, Shanghai will build a total of 13 land and sea-based wind farms in Nanhui, Qinjian and three islands (Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha). By 2020 Shanghai will have a total…

Wind power could make Norway “Europe’s battery”

Norway could become “Europe’s battery” by developing huge sea-based wind parks costing up to $44 billion by 2025.

StatoilHydro (STL.OL: Quote, Profile, Research) said last week that it will invest $80 million to build the world's first full-scale floating wind turbine to start up in 2009. Power from such installations is likely to be more…

Winds of change: The U.S. can greatly boost clean wind power for 2 cents a day. Now all we need is a president who won’t blow the chance.

The U.S. can greatly boost clean wind power for 2 cents a day. So, what's holding back America's clean energy revolution? Strong Presidential leadership and a Congress committed to clean, renewable energy.

While wind has not been able to compete with large central-station electric power plants for most of this century, it began to see a resurgence in the 1970s because of the energy crises and government support. Those wind turbines, however,…

NASA Calls on APL to Send a Probe to the Sun

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is sending a spacecraft closer to the sun than any probe has ever gone ? and what it finds could revolutionize what we know about our star and the solar wind that influences everything in our solar system.

APL will design and build the spacecraft, on a schedule to launch in 2015. The compact, solar-powered probe would weigh about 1,000 pounds; preliminary designs include a 9-foot-diameter, 6-inch-thick, carbon-foam-filled…
